Vegetable tanning agents
Many types of wood, bark and fruit contain tannins which are extracted and thus recovered for tanning. The tannins in wine are known to everyone and greatly affect its quality.
In our regions, oak and chestnut trees are well-known sources of tannin but no longer play a significant role.
Especially mimosa and quebracho trees and also the tara fruit extract from overseas are important sources of tannin nowadays. The vegetable tanning agents that we know provide full-bodied, robust and compact leathers on account of their chemical structure, as we know from the soles of our shoes, for instance.
